computer essentials and b3ta-ebay
Dr Pepper: whats the worst that can happen? you could splash some on your keyboard, making it all sticky and yukky. or should i say, stickier and yukkier than it was. benefits of working in IT: brought home replacement keyboard this evening, didnt cost anything 'cos we got shit loads of them.

i am going to pass on some of my IT expertise now of things every computer user should have.

  • flatscreen monitor. these things are the bees knees compared to crt screens (the big televisionesque screens), they're clearer and best of all take up hardly any space. my desk was swamped by my 17" crt but now i've got a 17" tft and there's plenty space. also, the viewing area is bigger so i can see more. yes, Inklet, i know i make everything tiny. but i can see more on my screen now so ha. and anyway i make dvds full screen so resolution is irrelevant there.

  • optical mouse. who has cleaned a mouse ball? even on the cleanest of surfaces (that includes Inklet's bedroom which is always clean) they pick up dirt and can get clogged up. spend a likka bit more on an optical mouse; i've had one for about 3yrs and occasionally wipe it on my trouser leg but it still works fine.

  • Office 2003. it isn't often that i see some software that i think is brilliant. but Office 2003 is fantastic, i really cannot fault it. it is worth the money for Outlook on its own - its been completely overhauled for the better, and has an excellent junk filter.

  • PROPER anti-virus. you all know about this from previous Tree rants. the amount of PCs i've seen that have been completely ballsed up because of viruses is just plain annoying. spend a bit of money, let it auto-update and that, you'll be fine. it doesnt take much effort.

there are also some things that are highly recommended but that i regard as a pile of wank.

  • cordless mouse/keyboard. ok, so you don't have cables in your way. but these things are a pain in the arse, for example what happens when the batteries run out? you have to go hunt yourself the right ones and then you have to resynch the keyboard and mouse simultaneously with the receiver and just dont bother mate, put up with the cables and get on with it. it does the same job.

  • dvd rewriter. these have been nothing but trouble, causing windows to freeze and be generally shite. oh yeah, and you people who think these are great so you can copy dvds, think about it. a commercial dvd has dual layers and a capacity of 9.4Gb. a recordable dvd can only have a single layer because of compression and shit like that, so just has a capacity of 4.7Gb. so therefore you can only copy half of the dvd. Treeson does not condone the use of dvd ripping software or piracy. those studios and thespians work bloody hard for their $10m for three months work with early mornings here and there and to look beautiful dahling.

been surfing the net at work again. may i reccomend the latest B3ta competition, make up stuff to sell on ebay. and on a personal note, i've just noticed that my self-taught touch-typing is getting pretty dam good and fast baybeh.

have a nice evening people.
